Like all sectors, the skills you require depend on the level you want to enter at, or progress to. If you are just starting out, then an apprenticeship is a great way to start. Print management can attract people from all backgrounds and lots of skills are transferable.
A strong eye for design – regardless which area of print management or POS appeals to you the most, a strong eye for design will help.
Ability to deal with pressure – often, print management jobs tend to come with client deadlines. Not only do you have to be able to work to these deadlines, but the work also needs to be of a very high standard. It costs a lot to re-print from a simple mistake.
Excellent problem-solving skills – this is a solutions led industry. You need to be able to quickly adapt to situations and take initiative to solve problems.
Strong communication skills – this can be anything from understanding a client’s brief to working with a team to deliver the client’s vision.
There are several options available if you are looking to gain a print management qualification. There are a number of diplomas and degrees available. And if you are genuinely interested in pursuing a career in print management, our advice is to check to make sure the course covers the areas that you are particularly keen to enter.
It may be pre-press or print buying; print production or ICT (communications technology), just be sure to choose what’s right for you.
However, as the industry develops, there is increasing demand for more varied skills. Many employers are open to taking people from industries that share a similar skillset. Things like IT, design, marketing, communications and more.
