Do you want to break into the 3D printing sector? The lockdown may have given you time to think about your long-term career. Maybe you are looking for more security? Maybe you want to join an industry that really does something ‘good’ and is able to give something back.
Whilst many businesses are struggling to keep things on track through the pandemic, some industries are thriving! You don’t have to look far on your social media feed to find stories of how the 3D print industry stepped forward to help produce PPE for our healthcare workers.
But this is just the start of what 3D printing can do and how quickly it can adapt. We are seeing more and more amazing things appear in our day to day lives as a result of 3D printing.
3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing, is a rapidly growing industry where even throughout the pandemic, demand for skilled workers is increasing.
This is one of the great things about the 3D sector, the industry is taking people from a variety of backgrounds. It’s a sector that brings together hardware, software and materials knowhow and there are a wide-range of jobs to suit.
Some careers in 3D printing don’t even need you to have any experience of the sector. An interest and passion will get you far. However, if you do have some experience of 3D printing, this will help you stand apart from other applications. Include a portfolio of your work – even if just as a hobby. It’s a great way to show off your skills.
There are a lot of career choices available from sales and marketing to software engineers and everything in-between. Whilst a lot will ask for a degree, it doesn’t have to be directly linked to 3D printing.
There are several degrees that are a perfect fit for entry into the 3D market. Therefore, if you studied any of the subjects below, there’s a 3D print company out there who are interested in talking to you.
Engineering – a company relies on it’s 3D printers working consistently and reliably. If you have an engineering degree then you are more likely to be able to understand, maintain and operate 3D printers with minimal up-skilling.
Software Development – 3D printers are developing at a rapid rate to keep in line with the increasing demand in applications. Skills in software development means that you could develop better interfaces, cross platform software and much more.
Animation and Design – before a 3D item is printed, visual concepts are produced with 3D software. If you have a background in 3D animation then you already have the skills to take things from concept to tangible objects.
Biomedical Tech – there’s a huge demand for 3D technology in the healthcare sector in recent weeks. But, it isn’t just the pandemic that has seen a use for 3D in this sector. 3D printing is used for replacement body parts, from knees and hips and even hearts! Applications of 3D for medical use is one of the biggest growing areas.
As the industry develops, there is increasing demand for more varied skills. There more applications there are for 3D, the more we will look to more traditional skills to bring less experienced people into this exciting sector
The growth of 3D printing is having a dramatic effect on the number of rewarding roles it creating. Whether you are creatively or mechanically inclined, you can adopt your skills with just a little training and additional knowledge.
We are seeing new roles being created all the time. There’s real excitement in the industry for the future. Where will it take us?
Just take a look at our current vacancies to see the varied roles currently available in the industry.
You may want to work behind the scenes. Service engineers and software developers make sure that designs are fit for purpose and machines are working at their best.
Or maybe you re more customer facing. Sales, marketing and account management roles are for you. When marketing and selling customised products and prototypes you have to make sure that you can answer all the customers questions. This may be on 3D printing techniques, capabilities of software and printer, what materials are best and a whole lot more.
There’s lots that the 3D printing sector can offer. It’s a great sector to be part of!
