With any job, there are specific requirements that you will have to meet. Most roles will have an essential and a desirable list. Before you start your cover letter, score yourself out of 10 on all the essential skills. Making sure that you have most, if not all of the skills and qualifications needed is a great place to start.
You may want to think about going as far as listing the essential skills on your cover letter and sharing your scores, and maybe, you years of experience in the letter itself. This will help your cover letter stand out. It shows that you have take the time to read the job description (or advert) carefully. It also shows that your application is a considered one and you are not just applying for anything!
The idea of a cover letter is that it goes beyond your CV. Don’t just copy and paste sections from your cv that you think are relevant. If your CV is strong enough then these points should already be clear.
Here’s some great questions to ask yourself as you start to write your cover letter –
You may be the very best person for the job, but make sure it’s not all about you on your cover letter. Think about what you would bring to the position and what you could do for the company. Give examples of how you have helped previous employers achieve their goals. Have you been involved in projects that have made a considerable difference – financially or otherwise?
Most job descriptions will show you what a company wants from their next employee. Look deep enough and you will be able to see key competencies, desired attitude and much more. Is there a company pain point you can identify? If so, this is gold dust. Write about how you could solve this pain, how you have done it before and a little about the results.
