Over the last few years, we have seen several construction companies turn to 3D printing. As a result, they have been able to reduce the cost of building houses. Many now argue that printable homes represent the latest wave in construction. However, they’re not always easy to build.
In this blog, we will explore how far 3D printed houses have evolved and what their future looks like. Will they completely revolutionise the construction industry or will bricks and mortar prevail?
Most innovations that are fresh on the market come with a particular price tag. Large concrete 3D printers are no different, boasting a high price tag when they were first launched. However, what you’ll find with most technologies, is that their prices will drop as new, more affordable and better products are developed. Nevertheless, in general, a 3D printed house can cost as little as $10,000 or less! Today, there are several companies testing out 3D printed buildings around the world. Let’s take a look at some of them.
In March 2018, a construction company called ICON teamed up with a housing non-profit called New Story. ICON are specialists in finding low-cost construction solutions, hence why this 3D printed home is the project they’re most proud of. The duo worked together to build an entire neighbourhood full of these 3D printed houses. Their overall goal is to provide homes for those who don’t have appropriate living conditions. The prototype as seen in the image above cost $10,000 to create. Moreover, it was built in 24 hours! ICON have said they can even bring the cost down to $4,000 which is fantastic!
Apis Cor is a Russian company that specialise in developing a mobile construction 3D Printer. To show off exactly what they can do, they built a 410 square foot house costing only $10,150! Their website provides more specific and detailed costings:
Apis Cor even went as for as decorating the house on the inside. They equipped it with a TV screen, sofa and a fridge along with all the other typical household furniture. Click here to watch exactly how they built this house.
Winsun are said to have built the most advanced 3D printed building in the world! This beautiful, futuristic, 3D printed building took Winsun only 17 days to print! However, this was more expensive than the pervious two 3D printed houses we’ve looked at. The building comes in at around $140,000. However, you must bear in mind how expensive a building of this size would cost to build in the traditional way!
Last year, a family in France became the first in the world to move into a 3D printed house. It’s a four-bedroom property that is being used as a prototype for bigger projects. The house took 54 hours to print and cost around $226,700. However, this is 20% cheaper than an identical construction made from traditional solutions.
We think the answer to this is that it already has. Companies have proved that it’s possible to 3D print an entire home at a fraction of the cost of using traditional methods. Moreover, it can also be done in a matter of hours. Amazing! The world is currently facing a global housing crisis, and 3D printed houses could be a sustainable way of helping to tackle this!
We’re so excited to keep up with all the latest advancements in 3D printed houses. Will the traditional, more expensive and time-consuming method be no more? The world of 3D print is growing and expanding every day, and rapidly at that! We simply cannot wait to see how far it goes.
