Imagine, you’re sat in your next interview and it’s all going really well. You’re asked some great interview questions. You’ve highlighted your relevant experience and why you are the ideal candidate for the job.
But remember, an interview is a two-way street. So when the hiring manager opens up the floor and asks, ‘do you have any questions for us?’, ‘No, we’ve covered it all thanks’ is probably the wrong answer!
Asking questions at the end of an interview can help express your interest in the role. They can also help to further build rapport with the hiring manager. Additionally, they provide you with the window of opportunity to gather as much information as possible about the job.
Take a look at our latest jobs and let’s put these questions to the test.
This is a great way of finding out what it’s really like working for the company. Finding out what drives someone to come to work every day will give you a real insight. Not only into the job itself, but also the personality of the hiring manager. Also, if this is someone that you would report directly to it’s important to have some shared values.
If you receive an answer with passion and energy behind it, that also links to your values and desired company culture, you know that you’re in for an enjoyable working life.
Another question you could ask instead of this is “What made you come and work for x Company”. Find out what attracted them to the role, or the company. What was it that made them change jobs? Asking questions like this shows that you really do care about the decision you are making when taking a new job.
You may not be focused on climbing the career ladder, but this question is still important. People move on from jobs for many reasons, and boredom and lack of challenge is certainly up there. Therefore, find out what the business plans to do with the role, or even the department to get a more long-term view on your career.
Could there be opportunities for progression? A change of department maybe? Or it could be that there is a really exciting project in the pipeline that you could be involved with. Don’t just think of the here and now, plan for the future too.
This is a great way to gauge what could be expected of you from the company. Talk about the first few months and how that might look. Positioned in the right way this shows hiring managers that you’re driven. That you have the desire to get involved and hit the ground running from the offset.
If you feel like the interview has gone well, and you’d love to be considered for this position, this is a great question to ask.
By asking this question, you’re showing hiring managers that you are interested and keen to progress to the next step. Additionally, tell the interviewer that you are interested in the role if you are. Don’t leave them guessing.
