Ready to write the best IT CV yet?
You’ve probably drafted a lot of CV’s since leaving school. But now that you’re higher up the ranks it’s important to differentiate your style to reflect the seniority of your role.
Are you struggling to format your CV to meet the standard of your next IT opportunity? If you’re now looking for a new IT role, it’s time to consider the format of your CV to really benefit your application.
Here are our top tips on how to format your IT CV:
Firstly, the format of your CV and its readability is paramount as it will influence whether your CV will be shortlisted. It is important that your CV is concise and to the point. For someone with years of experience like yourself, this may seem like a challenge. Ideally, you need to keep your CV to a maximum of 2 pages, sectioned into appropriate subheadings.

Once you’ve worked on the structure of your IT CV, it’s time to add depth with some engaging copy. The best way to open your CV is with an executive summary. This is your first opportunity to shine! It’s the first thing a recruiter/hirer will read and it’s your opportunity to showcase your key skills, experience and values.
An executive summary is literally that – a summary of your cv, highlighting the most important areas that may help you stand out from the crowd.
Don’t hide your skills in amongst your work experience. Make it simple when it comes to shortlisting decisions. Following your executive summary, include a table of skills and your level of experience in each. You can do this in years, or with a simple intermediate, or advanced. It’s probably best not to include skills where you feel you are at beginner level. Stick to the skills that help prove your suitability for the role.
Doing this will help recruiters spot your suitability efficiently, while showcasing that you know what you’re talking about in the industry.
Now you’re at a stage where you have a wealth of experience behind you, use this to your advantage when thinking of the format of your CV. At senior level, it is likely that you have quantitative results from your career. List your key achievements for each of your relevant roles. This will provide practical evidence of your capability and whether you can help to achieve company goals.
