Did you know that LinkedIn has more than 600 million users worldwide? But why do you need a profile? What are the benefits? LinkedIn is your online presence when it comes to business – no profile = no presence! Having a profile on LinkedIn that ticks all the boxes also means that you are more likely to be headhunted. And whether you are actively looking for work in 3D print, print management or IT, or are just curious, having a presence on LinkedIn may mean that you get to hear about unique opportunities that are not necessarily available on the open market. A LinkedIn profile will help potential employers and recruiters like us see your experience at a glance. Here’s our top tips when it comes to making the most of your LinkedIn profile. Because sometimes a poor profile can be worse than no profile at all.
A profile picture is your chance to create a first impression. It’s not the place for picture of nights out, holidays or pets – keep that to Facebook. It’s important that the picture you choose is right for your industry and your position. If you are camera shy and don’t want a traditional ‘head shot’ there are other ways of keeping it professional. Look at your competitors, your colleagues and your peers. Anything there that would work for you? Just don’t not have anything! If you don’t include a profile picture, think what that says about you. Does it say that you don’t understand technology? That you don’t finish a job properly? Make sure that you stand out for the right reasons.
When you search for someone on LinkedIn, what do you see before you click into the profile? When you are searching on LinkedIn, the first thing you see is a thumbnail image and a headline. TOP TIP – the headline does not have to be your job title! LinkedIn is set to default to this but, you have 120 characters, so you can be as creative as you want to be. You can even use emoji’s if appropriate – they certainly help you to stand out, but keep it professional. To get your headline right think about what it is your job achieves. That’s your eye-catching headline right there. ‘Helping to make the world a greener place with 3D print’. ‘Helping to create intuitive print solutions of the future’ – just a couple of ideas to help you hone your eye-catching headline.
Despite having 2000 characters to use in your summary, our advice is don’t! We live in a world where we consume bite sized pieces of information meaning that if your summary is too long it probably won’t get read. Keep it short and interesting! Think of this as your elevator pitch. Getting it right will really help you to stand out. Need some inspiration? Take a look at your peers or competitors for some ideas. But remember to make it your own! Think of it as the same as a personal profile on your CV.
Just because you have a LinkedIn profile, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you will start receiving connection requests. You have to be proactive and send out invitations. If you are totally new to LinkedIn, start with your colleagues and go from there. LinkedIn is full of fantastic algorithms that will make suggestions of who you should connect with, but don’t just rely on this. LinkedIn doesn’t know everything about you just yet! If you are looking for work then connect with specialist recruiters who work in your sector. Connect with influencers in your market place and join groups.
Having recommendations on your profile says that other people think that you are good at what you do. So good in fact that they took time out of their day to recommend you. This speaks volumes! But again, you have to be proactive. There’s a function on LinkedIn to ask for recommendations – use it and reap the rewards! Spending just 30 minutes once a month on your profile will seriously pay off in the long run.
So now that you have a standout LinkedIn profile, why not send us a connection request? Follow us on LinkedIn and be the first to know about new opportunities in 3D print, print management and IT.
